COVID-19 has affected people all over the planet. Truckers and the movement of freight is more important now than ever before. Essential resources such as food, water, and medical supplies need to reach their destinations faster than ever. With that said, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has postponed the annual International Roadcheck inspection blitz.
The blitz was going to take place from May 5 to May 7. The dates were first announced in January of 2020. However, the impact of COVID-19 has made the organization rethink its plans. CVSA has stated it will continue to monitor the pandemic and announced new dates at an appropriate time.
The International Roadcheck blitz is a three-day enforcement initiative, which pushes the importance of commercial motor vehicle safety. All over North America, vehicle inspectors will perform inspections on commercial vehicles. Each year emphasizes a different area, and 2020 is focusing on driver requirements.
This is the first time in 32 years the International Roadcheck has postponed. CVSA President Sgt. John Samis had the following to say,
“As we urgently respond to this time-sensitive crisis, we must remain diligent and committed to ensuring that the commercial motor vehicles and drivers providing essential goods and services to our communities are following motor carrier safety regulations. Safety doesn’t take a break. It is always our top priority. International Roadcheck has run on-schedule for the past 32 years, so its postponement was thoroughly and thoughtfully discussed before we made this decision, but it wasn’t a difficult decision to make. This experience is unprecedented in our modern society, and we need to do all that we can to help stop the spread of this global pandemic.”
There are currently no plans to postpone Operation Safe Driver Week and Brake Safety Week. July 12-18 and August 23-29 were the original dates, respectively.
